Jeffs Cruise to 17-6 Win Over Conn. College

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Quinn Moroney '16 had three goals and six assists to lead the 20th-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory at Connecticut College Tuesday.

The Jeffs improved their record to 9-2 with a 4-2 mark in the NESCAC, while the Camels fell to 7-5 with a 3-4 record in league play.

With nine more points on the day, Moroney now has a remarkable 64 on the year with four regular season games remaining. Only Moroney and Derek Cherney '07 have scored 60-plus points dating back to 1999. In 2005, Cherney totaled 68.

Kane Haffey '16 contributed with three goals for the visitors. Devin Acton '14 and Chris Albanese '17 both contributed with two goals and an assist for the Jeffs. Ryan Cassidy '16 corralled a team-best seven ground balls and senior goalie Greg Majno posted the victory with six saves in the cage.

Connecticut College junior Tyler Hegarty scored three goals in the setback for the Camels. Derek Bertolini '15 scored twice. Briggs Barton '15 and JR Hartgers '14 both had two assists. John Hazard '14 won 14-of-23 faceoffs while collecting three ground balls and Sean Mackey '14 finished with nine saves in his first start in goal for the Camels.

Amherst took its first lead with 9:37 remaining in the opening quarter when Moroney assisted Charlie Gill '16 to make it a 2-1 game.

In the second quarter, Moroney assisted Aaron Mathias '14 for a score that came from the top of the box to make it a 6-3 game. However, Thomas Woessner '14 answered with a goal from the left side of the box for the Camels with 1:53 remaining to make it a 6-4 game at the break.

Amherst scored 1:59 into the third quarter when Cassidy found the back of the net.

Connecticut College countered by scoring the next two goals in a 61 second span. Ross Thompson '17 assisted Hegarty for a score with 9:52 remaining. Then, with 8:51 to go, Hartgers made a pass from the right side over the middle to Hegarty, and the junior attackman scored his 25th goal of the season from point blank range to pull the Camels to within 7-6.

Amherst responded though and after Haffey scored with 2:35 left, Acton closed out the quarter when he rifled one home from the left side with nine seconds left that provided the visitors with a 9-6 advantage after three quarters of action.

Amherst took control in the fourth. Moroney made a nice feed to Dylan Park '16 who one-timed one home for a score with 12:12 remaining to make it a 10-6 game.

The visitors continued to pull away en route to the 17-6 victory. They held a 35-to-25 advantage in shots while carrying a 32-to-29 advantage in ground balls.

The Jeffs return to action Saturday, April 12 for a road game against conference rival Tufts at 1 p.m.
