WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Devin Acton '14 scored five goals and Quinn Moroney '16 dished out seven assists as the Amherst College men's lacrosse team cruised to a decisive 17-1 non-conference road win over Eastern Connecticut State University.
The Jeffs have now scored at least 15 goals in its first three games as they improve to 2-1 overall on the season. The loss marks the second straight for Eastern Connecticut as they drop to 2-2.
Acton posted a game-high five goals and added a groundball. In addition to his seven assists, Moroney also registered a score while his brother Patrick Moroney '14 recorded four assists and a goal. Kane Haffey '16 added four goals for Amherst while classmates Dylan Park and Charlie Gill scored two apiece. Ryan Cassidy '16 led the team with seven groundballs and Johno Gibbons '15 added five.
Mike Devine '14 scored the Warriors only goal and was assisted by Zach Thresher '15. Travis Tiger '15 led the team with four groundballs and four others picked up two each.
Amherst outshot ECSU 46-23, held a 32-21 edge in groundballs and won 19-of-22 faceoffs.
It took the Jeffs just 15 seconds to find the back of the net when Acton scored his eighth of the year unassisted. Amherst scored three goals within 1:40 of play until Devine temporarily slowed down the visiting team with a score to cut the deficit to two.
After more than 11 minutes of scoreless action, the Jeffs tacked on two goals within eight seconds of each other before the quarter ended to take a 5-1 lead after the first.
Quinn Moroney scored within the first minute of the second quarter as the Jeffs registered two more goals from Acton and Haffey to take an 8-1 lead into the break.
It was the same story in the second half as Acton scored at the 14:10 mark of the third. The Jeffs scored four more in the stanza before adding another four goals in the final 15 minutes to cruise to victory.
Greg Majno '14 registered 53:14 minutes in goal for the Jeffs. The senior allowed one goal and made 10 saves. Blake Smaldone '16 started the first half for the Warriors and allowed eight goals while stopping seven shots. Brendan Gillotti '16 played the second half and recorded eight saves and gave up nine goals.
Amherst is back in action Friday, Mar. 14 and will travel to Endicott for a 6 p.m. contest.
