The oldest athletic department in the nation, Amherst currently sponsors 27 varsity teams (13 male, 14 female) as a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Thirty-two percent of the student population participates in varsity athletics, with roughly 80 percent of students competing in intramural and club sports. 

Rooted in a strong tradition of excellence both on and off the field, Amherst has established itself as one of the premier athletic programs in NCAA Division III, having captured 11 NCAA team titles and 76 individual championships. With a successful broad-based program, Amherst has finished within the top-five in eight of the last nine seasons in the NACDA Directors' Cup standings among DIII schools for athletic achievement. Also regarded as one of the elite liberal arts colleges in the nation, Amherst's student-athletes have earned 33 selections to CoSIDA's prestigious Academic All-America Team.
